Do you want to record podcasts or create instructional videos with a voiceover? Are you looking for a reasonably priced, good quality USB microphone and headset?
I’ve been using the Humlin MC303 headset since 2012 when my web design business was in the very early stages.
It was purchased from eBay for the low price of £5 plus free delivery. I’ve looked on eBay today and I cannot find the same model as the one I have.
Browse USB mic headsets on Amazon and see what’s available.
Good Quality
Considering it cost only £5, expectations were not high. The thing was bought on a whim and if it wasn’t very good, at least it wouldn’t have been expensive.
When it arrived, I was amazed how good it sounded.
I was even able to record my guitar and harmonica by just sitting near enough to the mic!
USB Sound
For newbies/beginners wanting to get started with basic recordings and VoIP phone system, a cheap USB headset is fine.
If you’re a sound aficionado, you might want to go for something more up market.
You’ll be moving out of the category of consumer electronics to professional equipment.
Works Well with Skype
Saving money and keeping overheads was always part of the agenda, and the headset is also fully compatible with Skype.
My incoming/outgoing phone system is configured to usethe headset, so I can work at the computer while talking into the mic.
Using the Evaer plugin for Skype, myself and a fellow Twitter user recorded this short clip to advertise the #SmallBizHour weekly tweetchat.
Works with Video Capture Software
To record my videos I use something called Screencast-O-Matic. The mic works very well as part of the software.
Although I may upgrade to a professional microphone one day, the Humlin headset sounds like this on screencast videos.
I’ve always found the closer the mic to your mouth the better the bass response.
Record into Audacity
If you’re creating a podcast or sound clip, you can use your USB headset with Adobe Audacity (free) and edit the audio afterwards.
Buy a USB Headset Mic
Shop around or buy a mic now on Amazon.
Local music shops may stock some mics but if I were you I’d search online for a USB enabled device.
